About This Course

The Steel Fixer (Bar Binder) course trains students in cutting, bending, and tying steel reinforcement bars (rebar) into structural cages and mats for reinforced concrete (RCC) columns, beams, slabs, foundations, and walls.

Steel fixers are on the critical path of every RCC construction project — concrete cannot be poured until the steel reinforcement is correctly placed. This trade is in extremely high demand in Nepal and in Gulf infrastructure megaprojects including bridges, highways, towers, and industrial plants. This course is affiliated with CTEVT (Center for Technical Education and Vocational Training), Nepal.

What You Will Learn

  • Understand structural drawings and bar bending schedules (BBS)
  • Cut and bend rebar to precise dimensions using manual and machine methods
  • Fabricate column, beam, and wall reinforcement cages
  • Place and tie slab and foundation reinforcement mats
  • Achieve correct cover, spacing, and lap lengths per design
  • Tie rebar joints using binding wire
  • Work safely at height on slabs and in foundation pits
  • Coordinate with formwork and concrete teams

Course Curriculum

Month 1 — Fundamentals

  • Rebar types: TMT, Fe415, Fe500 — sizes and properties
  • Tools: bar cutters, benders, pliers, cover blocks
  • Reading structural drawings and BBS
  • Manual bending techniques

Month 2 — Structural Elements

  • Column and wall cage fabrication
  • Beam cage construction and placement
  • Slab reinforcement (one-way and two-way slabs)
  • Foundation and pile cap steel

Month 3 — Quality, Safety & Assessment

  • Cover, lap, and splice requirements
  • Machine-assisted cutting and bending
  • Site safety: working at height, lifting, PPE
  • Final practical assessment

Career Opportunities

  • Steel Fixer / Bar Binder (Nepal — buildings, bridges, roads)
  • Rebar Fixer (Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman)
  • Structural steel team leader
  • Infrastructure projects: dams, tunnels, flyovers

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this physically demanding? Yes — handling heavy steel rods is physical work. However, mechanical bar cutters and benders reduce manual effort significantly.

What are Gulf wages for steel fixers? NPR 65,000–1,00,000/month. Infrastructure megaprojects (bridges, metro stations) typically pay higher than residential work.

Do I need to know how to weld? No. Steel fixing uses wire binding, not welding. However, combining this course with our Welding course makes you more versatile.
